Sodium reacts with chlorine gas to produce the essential salt sodium chloride (NaCl). Chemical reactions produce new products that have totally different properties from the reactants that formed them. In this reaction an explosive metal reacts with a toxic gas to produce a life sustaining product.

2Na(s) + Cl2 (g) => 2NaCl(s)

Sodium chloride is essential for life and is needed in the diet of every person.

What are two things relevant to chlorine?

What are two things relevant to sodium?

Two very dangerous substances react to form an essential product for life. What evidence do we have that the formation of salt from sodium and chlorine is a chemical reaction.?
