Cell nucleus

The nucleus is a highly specialised organelle that can be considered to be the administrative centre of the cell as well as the library. It stores the cells genetic material and coordinates every facet of the cells existence. Copies of the genetic material, in the form of messenger RNA, are made and sent out of the nucleus to be translated into protein.

Only cells of high order organisms, known as eukaryotes, have a nucleus. The nucleus is enclosed in a porous double-layered membrane known as the nuclear envelope. The many pores in the nuclear envelope, known as nuclear pores, allow for communication between the nucleus and rest of cell. A structure called the endoplasmic reticulum is close to the nucleus and allows for rapid internal transport.
