Ribosome

The ribosome is an organelle that is the site for the process of translation. It is composed of complexes formed from ribosomal RNA and proteins. Here the genetic code, in the form of messenger RNA, is translated into a protein. The genetic code is translated into a linear sequence of amino acids linked end to end.

Ribosomes are located in two places throughout the cell. In the cytosol and on the surface of the rough endoplasmic reticlum.

They exist in the cytosol floating about linked by the mRNA, as shown in the electron microscope image on the right.

 

As the mRNA travels through the ribosomes the genetic code is translated into protein, as shown on the right. Amino acids are linked end to end by peptide bonds.

 

Ribosomes also exist on the membrane of the rough endoplasmic reticulum
