Examples of adaptation and evolution in a stick insect population.

Stick insects have developed some very unique methods of survival based on deception. Camouflage and innate behavior are its ultimate weapons against predators.

Innate behavior is inherited and has evolved to increase the individuals chance of survival and mating. A common reaction for many insects, when threatened, is to turn and run away from the predator. Some species of stick insects fake death when attacked. This has proved to be very successful in increasing the individuals chance of survival.

Some insect species also mimic scorpions. Mimicry of scorpions is an obvious advantage. Scorpions are aggresive and deadly and it is wise for predators to avoid anything that resembles a scorpion.

Another interesting defence mechanism is known as flash colouration. The insect has brightly coloured wings which may appear, at first, to be a distinct disadvantage. Click for more information on flash colouration
