Injury to tendons and ligaments

(ankle)
pictures on this page are taken from Sports Injuries published by Methuen Australia 1986

The ankle joint comprises the tibia, fibula and talus. The ankle joint is stabilized by strong ligaments.

The most common injury to the ankle is an inward turning of the sole of the foot.

Depending on the force with which the ankle is rolled different injuries can occur. These may range from tearing of ligaments between the talus and the fibula to fractures of the fibula. The image on the right shows injury to the deltoid ligamnet.
A forceful inward rotation of the foot can cause a rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament.
A vigorous outward rolling of the ankle can result in a rupture to the ligament connecting the fibula and heel. This is shown on the right.
