It is important to be able to estimate the number of standard drinks you or your friends have consumed. If you know the type of drink its volume should give you some indication as to the number of equivalent standard drinks .This activity is adapted from the Safe Party Guide and written by Kristen LeGassick.

Divide the class into teams of four.

Each team has ten cups, similar to the ones shown on the right, labelled:
-wine;
-spirit;
-full strength beer;
-low strength beer;
-port or sherry;
-alcoholic cider;
-champagne;
-wine cooler;
-alcoholic soda;
-pre-mixed spirits.

You will also need a litre of coloured water, funnel and a 200 ml measuring cylinder.

In each labelled cup a volume of water is poured that is equivalent to one standard drink. The volume is measure with the measuring cylinder.

Each group fills the sheet below. The record the mls of each drink that equates to one standard drink.
