Endless string.
(nylon synthesis)

Place 30 mls of adipyl chloride into a small beaker. Slowly add 30 mls of hexamethylene diamine. Hexamethylene diamine should float on the surface of the adipyl chloride.

Note - Adipyl chloride comes dissolved in dichloroethane. Dichloroethane is no longer recommended in schools. Use hexane to dissolve apilyl chloride.

A polymerisation reaction occurs where the two liquids come into contact with each other. The reaction produces nylon. Gloves and goggles must be worn for this demonstration.

Nylon can also be made from 1,6-diamoinhexane and hexane-1,6-dioic acid.

The monomers join to form nylon with expulsion of a water molecule at every bond.

This type of reaction is known as a condensation reaction.
