Aluminium reacts with iodine according to the equation below. 2Al(s) +3 I2(s) => 2AlI3(s)

As the reaction proceeds a great deal of energy is evolved as shown in the video on the right. |

The reaction gives off a great deal of heat. A molten product is visible, as shown on the right, after the reaction has ceased. As it cools the aluminium iodide becomes very brittle. The melting temperature of aluminium iodide is 191 oC. |

The solid aluminium iodide is very brittle and forms a fine powder when pressed. | |
