Magnesium is placed in the copper sulfate solution . The copper immediately deposits ont eh magnesium. Click to see a 120Kb movie.
Step 4 To recover the copper metal place a piece of magnesium ribbon in the coppersulfate solution. You will notice instantly the copper coming out of solution and depositing on the magnesium metal. If you wish to wait overnight or a few days place an iron nail in the solution and notice the slow deposition of copper.
If time permits place an iron nail in the solution and leave it for a day or two.

All the copper in solution has being deposited and the colour of the water becomes clear.

When all the copper has been deposited the solution becomes clear. Why do you think the copper sulfate solution is blue?
