Solution

1) Calculate the ΔH of the direct synthesis of methanol according to the equation 2C(s) + O 2(g) + 4H2(g) => 2CH3OH (g) ΔH = ?

given the ΔH of the following reactions.
1) ----- 2CH3OH (g) + 3O 2(g) => 4H2O(g) + 2CO2 (g) ΔH = - 1352 kJ/mol
2) ----- C(s) + O 2(g) => CO2(g) ΔH = - 393 kJ/mol
3) ----- 2 H2(g) + O2 => 2H2O(g) ΔH = - 484 kJ/mol

Step 1 reverse equation 1 and change the sign of the ΔH

4) ----- 4H2O(g) + 2CO2 (g) => 2CH3OH (g) + 3O 2(g) ΔH = 1352 kJ/mol

Step 2 Multiply equation 2 by 2

5) ----- 2C(s) + 2O 2(g) =>2 CO2(g) ΔH = - 786 kJ/mol

Step 3 add equations 4) and 5)

6) ----- 4H2O(g) + 2C (s) => 2CH2OH (g) + O 2(g) ΔH = 566 kJ/mol

Step 4 multiply equation 3) by 2

7) ----- 4 H2(g) + 2O2 => 4H2O(g) ΔH = - 968 kJ/mol

Step 5 add equations 6) and 7)

8) ----- 2C (s) + 4 H2(g) + O2=> 2CH3OH (g) ΔH = -402 kJ/mol
