The ideal gas equation
A 2.8 gram sample of nitrogen gas was placed in a 4000 ml container at a temperature of 15o C. What is the pressure exerted by the gas on the walls of the container?
(Atomic mass of nitrogen = 14)

Solution

Step 1- Find the mole of gas present.

The molar mass of N2 = 28
=>mole = mass/Molar mass = 2.8/28 = 0.1mole

Step 2- Convert the temperature from Celsius to Kelvin.
=>15 + 273 = 288o K

Step 3- Convert the volume from millilitres to litres.
=> 4000/1000 = 4 litres

Step 4- Solve for pressure
(units are not written here for simplicity)
=> P = (0.1 X 8.31 X 288) / 4 =59.83 kPa
