More reactive metals
Silver crystals deposit themselves on a piece of copper. Click to see a 180kb video of silver crystals growing.

The picture on the left shows silver metal being deposited on a piece of copper.

Which one of the two metals is more reactive? Explain.

Copper deposits itself on the iron. What can you say about the reactivity of iron as compared to that of copper. Explain your reasoning.
An iron nail covered with copper crystals as it remains submerged in copper sulfate solution.
The zinc metal is covered with copper metal.
Copper deposits itself on the zinc. At the point where zinc is submerged in the copper sulfate solution the copper deposit is visible. What can you say about the reactivity of zinc as compared to that of copper. Explain your reasoning.

Magnesium is a very reactive metal. Placed in a solution of copper sulfate it is possible to see the copper quickly forming on the magnesium metal while at the same time the magnesium is reacting with water to produce hydrogen gas. You may wish to view the 180kb movie of this reaction.
