During the moulding process filler molecules are added to the plastic. Filler molecules space the polymers apart to give the plastic flexibility and prevent cracking. Most plastic are composed of polymers that are held together by dispersion forces. Dispersion forces are weak and act over very short distances. By keeping the polymers apart, dispersion forces are not as strong due to the distance between polymers, and therefore the plastic is more flexible than it would be without the fillers. Ultra violet radiation tends to degrade plastics by destroying the filler molecules. Once the filler molecules are decomposed the polymers bond tightly and cause the plastic to become brittle and crack. Click for a more detailed explanation |
