Stoichiometry practical exercise

Calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid according to the equation above

Place approximately 1 gram of powdered calcium carbonate int he crucible.
40mls of acid are added to the calcium carbonate

Step 1 Place approximately 1 gram of powdered calcium carbonate in a crucible as shown above.

Step 2. Place 50 ml of 0.1M HCl solution in a 100ml beaker and weigh the beaker and its contents. Record the reading on the balance.

Step 3. Place the crucible with the powdered calcium carbonate on a digital balance. Record the reading on the balance.

Step 4. Pour the 50 ml acid solution into the crucible.

Step 5. Weigh the empty beaker.

Step 6. Notice how the balance reading decreases as the carbon dioxide gas escapes. When the mass stabilises , record the reading on the balance.
