Stomata

As the water escapes (evaporates) from the holes(stomata) at the surface of the leaf more water molecules move up to replace them. The column of water is dragged up tiny tubes in the stem of plants. Nutrients that are dissolved in the water are dragged up as well. The nutrients are used by leaf cells in the process of photosynthesis to make sugar for the plant. The plant uses sugar as food and as a building material to grow. The plant joins sugar molecules together end to end to make a very strong substance called cellulose which is used to build plant parts.

The stoma is a hole at the surface of the leaf where water escapes from. The opening is contolled by two cells on each side called the GUARD CELLS. The column of water moves up carrying with it the nutrients. As water molecules evaporate from the stoma more water is dragged up. The water molecule evaporating from the stoma.
