Electric power = current X voltage

1 watt = 1 ampere X 1 volt

When charge flows through a conductor it expends energy. This results in a coil heating, a light globe glowing or a motor turning. Electric power can be defined as the rate at which electrical energy is converted to other forms of energy such as heat , in the case of a toaster or mechanical energy in the case of motor.

A light globe rated at 100 watts is plugged into 240 volt outlet.Using the formula for electrical power we can calculate the current it draws at 0.42 (100/240) amperes.
An electric fan has the label pictured on the right. It to is plugged into a 240 volt outlet. Since it is rated at 50 watts it draws half as much current as the 100 watt globe. The current it draws is 0.21 amperes.

1) A tradesman uses a 1200 watt electric drill. His mate uses another drill rated at 1400 watts. Will a 10 amp safety fuse blow if the appliances are connected to a 240 volt outlets?
