Scientific investigation exercises part 2

Jonathon conducted the experiment shown on the left. He took a 1 gram piece of copper and dropped it in a beaker containing 50 ml of nitric acid. He then covered the top of the beaker and measured the time it takes for the reaction to go to completion.

He then cut a 1 gram piece of copper metal into tiny pieces and repeated the experiment with exactly the same volume and concentration of nitric acid.

Label the statements below as either observations, hypothesis or inferences.

a) The solution turned blue.

b) The beaker was contaminated with blue food dye.

c) Judging by the number of bubbles the beaker may have been contaminated with impurities.

d) The contents of the beaker became very hot.

e) Gas was produced.

f) Gas was produced due to an unknown force and energy source.

Below are 5 statements.

1) The hotter the reactants the less time it takes for the reaction to reach completion.
2) The higher the concentration of the reactants the more time it takes for the reaction to reach completion.
3) The smaller the particles of the reactants the greater the amount of gas produced.
4) The smaller the particles of the reactants the faster the reaction reaches completion.
5) The smaller the reaction vessel the faster the reaction reaches completion.

Which one of the statements above best represents the hypothesis Jonathon was testing for in this experiment?
