Anomalous Data. 6

A slinky is held as shown on the right. It is suspended above the ground and then allowed to drop. Predict the motion of the slinky.

Make sure you do not watch the video before you make a prediction.

Explain how you arrived at your prediction and write it down. Outline all the assumptions you have made in arriving at this prediction.

Now click to see the experiment.

1) Was your prediction correct?

2) If the outcome did not match your prediction, should you modify the:

- fundamental ideas? Explain how

- assumptions? Explain why

Predict what would happen if we tied a tennis ball, or some other weight, to the bottom of the slinky and released it in a similar way to the one above.

Explain what assumptions you made to arrive at your prediction.

Now watch the video on the right.
