The invention of the
jet engine. |

Germany produced
the World's first jet fighter called the Messerschmitt Me 262. The Me
262 entered service in 1944 and was the fastest plane of WW II at speeds
of up to 852 km/h.

The operation
of a jet engine is simple. Air is forced into the front of the engine
and compressed by sets of rotating blades. The air is then channeled into
an ignition chamber where it is mixed with fuel and ignited producing
hot gases with a greater volume. These gases expand quickly and create
an enormous amount of thrust as they escape from the rear of the engine.
The hotter the temperature of the gases the greater the volume they seek
to occupy and threfore the greater the thrust produced.
