Demonstration

v = Final velocity
u= Initial velocity
a = Acceleration
t = Time.
d = Distance

d = ut + (1/2)at2

Lets use the above formula for an entertaining demonstration

Hold a ten dollar note, or if you dare a fifty dollar note, between the fingers of a person. Release the note, without any warning. If they catch the note they can keep it. The secret is to keep the top of the note about 7 cm above the fingers of the person.
It takes approximately 0.143 seconds for the nerve impulses to travel from the eye to the brain and into the muscles controlling the fingers. Click to see a 100kb movie.
What is the distance traveled by the note in 0.143 seconds if it is released from rest?
Use d = ut + 0.5at2

Where
u= initial speed = 0 (starts from rest)
t = 0.143 seconds
a = 9.8 m/s/s
d = 0.5 X 9.8 X (0.143)2 = 0.1m or 10cm

1) A person's reaction time is measured at 0.176 seconds. A ruler is held just above the fingers of this person, as shown on the right and released from rest. How many centimetres does the ruler drop through before the person can catch it between their fingers?
