In an old, disused industrial complex several drums containing a heavy liquid were discovered. Some drums were severely rusted and about to burst. A sample of this liquid was collected and analysed with an atomic emission spectrometer. The spectrum of this substance is given below.
Identify the substances present in the drums by comparing the spectra of known elements.
Mercury | |
Sulfur | |
Oxygen | |
Chlorine | |
A brand of salts
called Health Salt was analysed. A sample of the salt was dissolved in hydrochloric
acid and held under a bunsen flame. The flame colour was then observed with
a spetroscope. The spectrum produced by the salt is shown below. In the
advertising brochure it states "This salt contains potassium to
revitalise heart function" Is this a false claim? What element can you identify as being present in the Health Salts? |
|
The Health Salts. | |
The spectra of known elements are shown below.
Potassium | |
Zinc | |
Mercury | |
Copper |
