Factorising quadratics trinomials.

Expressing as a product of two brackets

Consider the quadratic equation below

6x2 -7x + 2

Step 1 Always remove a common factor

In this case there is no common factor.

Step 2 Write the factors of the number in front of the x2 term in a set of brackets.

In this case the factors are
6 and 1
or
2 and 3

Step 3 Write the factors of the number part of the trinomial in each bracket as shown when you click on the blue writing..

In this case the factors are
2 and 1

Step 4 Now assign + or - signs inside the brackets.

As a guide note that when:
- a) the number part of the trinomial is positive and the middle term is negative both brackets should have a negative sign, as shown on the right when you click on the blue writing..

- b) the number part of the trinomial and the middle term are both positive then the sign in both brackets is positive

- c) the number part of the trinomial is negative then one of the brackets contains a "+" while the other contains a "-" as shown on the right when you click on the blue writing.
