Understanding our Solar System -Edwin Hubble

Edwin Hubble
1889 - 1953

Hubble showed the existence of galaxies beyond our own Milky Way. He also proposed a law that explains how the galaxies are moving away from each other, suggesting the Universe is expanding. The more distant galaxies are from Earth the greater their speed away from Earth. He also observed that the greater the distance between two galaxies the greater their speed away from each other. This was to become Hubble's Law.

Hubble's discovery led astronomers to the Big Bang theory, a theory that we now have great confidence in. If it is getting bigger it must have started from some small starting point.
