Archimedes

Myth has it that during the ancient siege of Syracuse, Archimedes set fire to a fleet of invading ships using mirrors to focus the sun’s light.

Archimedes used a collection of large mirrors made of bronze and glass to reflect rays of light onto enemy ships during the siege in 213BC. The ships were supposed to have been reduced to ashes.

Using a set of mirrors and a thermometer construct an experiment to determine if the sun's rays can be reflected onto an object with enough intensity to cause it to burn.

You will need a number of mirrors and helpers.

Focus the reflected light onto a single piece of paper and record the temperature.

Design an investigation to answer the question below.
Does the intensity of light reflected onto an object decrease as the distance of the mirror from the object increases?

Activity.
Sailors who are stranded at sea face the ever present danger of dehydration. Eventhough they are surrounded by water it is undrinkable.
Suppose that you are a scientist working for the military. You are given the task of designing an effective water purifier that will produce fresh water from salty water and can be carried in a small bag by sailors or marines.
Use the sun's energy where ever possible as the device may have to work over several days while the marines are waiting to be rescued.
