In 1935 Einstein was asked if the atom would ever yield its energy. He replied, " It is like shooting for birds in the dark in a country which has very few birds". Einstein was dismissive, as the energy required to split the atom was far more than the energy yielded during nuclear fission.

The Nazi war machine soon took on the challenge of attempting to produce nuclear energy according to Einstein's equation.
