Instantaneous dipoles and dispersion forces.
Other symmetrical molecules that have polar covalent intramolecular bonding but their intermolecular bonding depends on dispersion forces include methane(CH4 ) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ). The methane molecule is shown on the right. Its symmetrical nature means that its surface has a slight positive charge. Molecules repel each other. However, the fact that we can liquefy both methane and carbon tetrachloride, indicates the presence of intermolecular forces of attraction. These forces are, once again, dispersion forces that come about due to the formation of instantaneous dipoles. Click to see an animation.
