Using levers in models

Task. 1

Construct Hydraulicus. Hydraulicus may be ordered through Dynamic Science Education. Fax an official school order form to Dynamic Science Education on the fax number below.

Click to see a 120kb movie of Hydraulicus.
Using paint and other Art-Craft products see if you can give hydraulicus a bird or dinosaur appearance.

What type of lever system is used to operate the jaws of Hydraulicus?

What type of lever lifts the neck of Hydraulicus? Is this designed for multiplying force or distance? Explain.

What type of lever system is used to turn the body of Hydraulicus? Is this designed for multiplying force or distance? Explain.
Can you improve the turning mechanism so that Hydraulicus turns through a greater distance?

Task 2

Construct a bridge to span a distance approximately 1 metre in length. The bridge must be able to rise via hydraulic pressure. Below is an example of one type of construction. Click to see a 120kb video of the bridge in operation.
Click to see a 120kb the multiple lever lifting mechanism of the bridge. What type of lever does the lifting mechanism represent?

What type of lever is this?

Identify the fulcrum, load and effort.

Is this lever designed to multiply force or distance?

Another design of a bridge is pictured on the right. Click to see a 120kb video on how the bridge is raised.

What type of lever is this?

Identify the fulcrum, load and effort.

Is this lever designed to multiply force or distance? * Hint note the distance of the effort from the fulcrum.

Taks 3

Design a crane that can lift the heaviest load possible at the greatest height. The crane must operate by two syringes of size 10ml and 2.5ml . The picture on the right shows one particular design.
In your design show the location of the syringe that controls the lifting of the arm.
